Welcome to the World I Almost Left Behind
Hi, I’m Anna Smeda.
I grew up in southern Poland, in a small town between Kraków — a city of history and legends — and Zakopane, where the mountains take over. Forests, hills, and changing seasons were simply part of everyday life.
I studied at the State High School of Fine Arts in Nowy Wiśnicz, but some of my most important lessons came from paying attention: watching light move through trees, noticing a wildflower beside the road, or seeing an animal appear for only a moment before it vanished again.
Then life carried me away from painting for almost twenty years.
When I finally returned, something inside me opened back up. Art hadn’t left — it had simply been waiting for me.
Now based in New Jersey, I create acrylic, oil, and layered mixed-media paintings inspired by those small encounters with nature. My hope is simple: that my work gives you a moment to pause, feel something, and perhaps recognize a piece of your own story within it.
Inspired by nature. Made to be felt.
The Quiet Things Matter
I paint to preserve moments of quiet wonder that are so easily passed by.
A wildflower growing beside the road. Butterflies moving from bloom to bloom. Bees drinking from a puddle. The way light settles across a landscape just before it changes. These moments are ordinary to most people — but to me they feel sacred. I don’t want them to disappear unnoticed.
Nature is my visual language, but my paintings aren’t really about landscapes or animals. They’re about memory, resilience, and the quiet beauty that’s always here if we slow down enough to see it.
Every piece grows in layers — texture, color, symbolism — the same way memories and feelings build over time. I blend what I observe with what I imagine, so a wildflower or a bee becomes less a record of what I saw and more an invitation to pause, breathe, and reconnect with something quieter in yourself.
I don’t paint only what I see. I paint what I feel.
